The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is the largest event held in the state of New Mexico, bringing over 550 ballooning teams together for ten days for exciting competitions and public events. With almost one million visitors from 17 countries, the need to deliver breaking news and pertinent information about traffic conditions, alternative transit options, and weather, which directly affects whether each hot air balloon event is cancelled, is vital.
Developed through a public/private partnership, the ABQ Fiesta mobile app includes city-managed apps such as transit and cultural events in addition to breaking information delivered by a news agency whose staff are curating ongoing information from team members on site as well as in the news room, making it possible for this civic event mobile app to become a highly trusted source of official, breaking news for locals and visitors. Additional features are planned to provide users with enhanced traffic reporting and real-time route planning to better manage traffic during the event.
